Neal J Johnson, President & CEO of Special Olympics New York
Special Olympics is all about our athletes and providing quality athletic experiences at the many Local, Regional, State, National and World competitions.

Over 2,000 competitors participated at our recent New York State Summer Games in Binghamton and hundreds of training clubs are currently getting "our athletes"; ready for the Fall Season. We are proud to be sending 10 athletes from every corner of the state to the World Winter Games to be held in Boise, Idaho next February. Special Olympics is a seven day a week, 52 week organization that relies on its many friends, volunteers and donors who help make it all possible.

That's why we are so excited to be working with a new organization. The New York State Rental Dealers Association has joined Special Olympics New York in an in-store pin-up campaign with proceeds to benefit our 46,107 athletes. Kicking off on August 8, 265 member store locations will be selling "torch" icons for $1, $3 and $5 dollars each to their customer base throughout the months of August and September. Please click here for a list of store locations closest to you and to find out more about this great fund raiser.

For information about this campaign or to find out how you or your business/organization can get involved in the Special Olympics movement please email smacbryde@nyso.org
Special Olympics New York Athletes to Represent USA

Neal J. Johnson, president and CEO of Special Olympics New York has announced that 10 athletes from New York have been selected to represent the USA at the World Winter Games to be held in Boise, Idaho, February 6-13, 2009. They will join 3,000 athletes from more than 85 nations to compete in seven winter sports. The participation of the New York State athletes is being made possible in large part through the support of the GabriAnna Star Foundation.

Said Frank Delli Carpini of the GabriAnna Star Foundation, "The greatest achievement for every athlete is to compete at the highest level. For Special Olympics athletes that's the World Games. The GabriAnna Star Foundation is proud to support a mission that focuses on personal achievement and equal opportunity. Through sports the athletes gain a sense of independence, develop collegial identity and are able to contribute to society. The GabriAnna Star Foundation stands behind that 100 percent."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

You may now register online for the Special Olympics NYC Region Coaches' Conference on August 2nd, 2008!

Please visit http://nyso.org/NYC/conference.php.

Alternate registration options: contact Colleen Everett via phone (212) 661-3963 or email ceverett@nyso.org.

This conference is a great way to start the certification process for new coaches and will hold invaluable information for veteran coaches!  The conference will be held at:

Aviator Sports Center
Hangar 5
Floyd Bennett Field
Brooklyn, NY 11234

For more information and directions, you can visit their website at http://www.aviatorsports.com.  This venue is easily accessible from all five boroughs and contains ample free parking!

For new coaches, this conference is the jumping off point for you to join the exciting and rewarding experience of training Special Olympics athletes!  Individuals over the age of sixteen may become certified.  The time commitment involved after you are certified is about one to two hours per week, per sport season.  In order to become a certified coach, you must attend a General Orientation/Protective Behaviors class, complete a volunteer application, sport-specific training, and a 10-hour practicum.  This conference combines the first three steps into one simple process and leaves you ready to start your 10-hour practicum.  We are offering sports-specific training in soccer.  You should still attend this conference even if you are interested in coaching a sport other than those offered, as the initial certification steps are uniform.  The conference should last from about 8:30am to 12:15pm for new coaches.  We will have free giveaways and provide lunch.

For veteran coaches, the time requirement is only 8:30am to 11:30am (lunch begins at 11:30am, which you may choose to stay for or not) and we will have free giveaways!  Please attend!
